With over 1 million swimming pools in addition to the 30,000 lakes, the state of Florida is the place to enjoy recreational water activities. This easy access to refreshing water also presents a serious safety hazard for young children, and unfortunately, "Florida loses more children under the age of five to drowning than any other state in the nation. These deaths are 100 percent preventable." - myflfamilies.com

Highlands County is also home to 100 lakes and many pools. To address water safety and education, the Champion for Children Foundation and community partners help promote drowning awareness and water safety. Contact the YMCA and local high schools for swim lesson and water safety classes. The Champion for Children Foundation is able to assist families who need help covering the cost of swim lessons/water safety classes to ensure our community’s children are safe in and around water.
